The Tales series...

The Tales of * series has had many releases over the years. Tales of Phantasia for the SNES and GBA was the first in the series, and there’s been several releases for the Gamecube, PS1, PS2, and other systems.

I’m done with the series. I just hate the combat system they use. I first tried Tales of Symphonia for the Gamecube, and most recently Tales of Phantasia for the GBA. I’m almost to this point with the Star Ocean series as well. Action based combat in an RPG is very hard to do right. Radiata stories is one of the few that made it really enjoyable recently. Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2 were two previous ones that were quite fun.

It just seems that it goes awry more often than not. I hope Dragon Quest 9 escapes the action rpg curse…

I may try one more game in the series. Legenda or Abyss perhaps. But if that one is as dull as the two I’ve already tried, I’ll be completely through with the series.

Lets see…
Enix/Triace: Star ocean, Valkyrie Profile, radiata stories. Kind of hit-or-miss.
Level 9: Dark Cloud ½, Dragon Warrior 9, Rogue Galaxy. Seems solid so far.
Namco: Tales series, pretty shoddy.
Enix/Quintet: Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma. All pretty solid, but none of them recent.
Square: Mana series, Kingdom Hearts ½, Dirge of Cerberus. Somewhat hit or miss.
Konami: Castlevania SOTN and other arpg castlevanias. Nice and solid.
