I’ve gotten my list down to 104. Still not good enough, I think I probably have to be somewhere around 60 for me to actually finish them in time, so I’m still looking through to see what I can drop. Making this intermediate update so I can clean the list down…

The history lesson 🔗

Of course, people are saying “where can you go, few other people have physical games”

The point wasn’t really Physical games per-se, but the obvious trajectory of Playstation. They’re on the ratcheting up and the twisting of the screws on their consumers. It’s been a steady thing with some small steps backward over time.

At first, it was just the PS1 and the Net Yaroze. They actually sold to consumers a version of the development hardware. Then on the PS2, they actually sold a Linux kit for the PS2 console, so anyone could develop things on the PS2. Then on the PS3, you didn’t even need to buy a kit, you could just download and burn a disc from the internet and boot into Linux. Then they stripped that functionality.

Then even in the early days of digital game stores, the PSP and PS3, they made it very consumer friendly. You could have up to 5 consoles of each type, PSP and PS3. If you used up all of your slots you can just deactivate one of them and activate a different one. If you lost a console, once every few years they would allow you to reset your account and go back to having 5 systems. This was the system that they had during their first attempt at an all-digital console. When they released that, I didn’t grab one because the only thing I owned digitally were digital-exclusives. I believe this 5-console limit carried on to the early Vita as well. Sometime around the release of the PS4, they ratcheted it down to just 2 consoles for each type. 2 PSPs, 2 Vitas, 2 PS3s. They did loosen up how often you could reset your account, but that didn’t do much. I can’t remember if the PS4 was launched with this 2 console limit or not, but after awhile they switched to a new pattern. 1 PS4 could be used offline, every other PS4 had to be always online. Only the offline console would allow other accounts to play games on your account.

The physical discs were then a way to actually use games that other people in the household bought on consoles that weren’t the primary. They won that entire generation on the strength of the ability to share physical games between friends despite their abysmal digital policy. Because of that, they deserve to lose any generation that they take the other side of.

I have a lot of digital games too, but they’re mostly on extreme discount aside from the Vita games. On portable, digital is actually more convenient. On home consoles though, having to shuffle digital games on the storage and buy more storage for the system is far more of a hassle than swapping discs, and having to worry about which system can play which game on which account is a huge hassle. So mostly, the digital games on the home consoles are because some games are digital exclusives, and the rest are because the digital games sometimes get extreme discounts. Back on the PS3/PS4/Vita era, I was actually watching the PSN for the sales. I imagine the days of extreme discounts are over now.

Why I used Playstation to begin with. 🔗

1. The games I can only get there.
2. The games that I couldn’t play on my operating system of choice.
3. Portable gaming systems that fit in my pocket.
4. That PC did not have as good of sharing option as physical for most of their stores.
5. Sunk Costs.

Why these things no longer have a hold. 🔗

The games I can only get there 🔗

So, what did I play there? Square and Enix games. Final Fantasy games, many of those in the PS1 and 2 days were only released on the PS1 or PS2. Some of those games are still trapped on those consoles to this day. These are important because about 95% of why I bought my first playstation was Final Fantasy. Dragon Quest games. DQ7, 8, and 11 in particular. Games like Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Threads of Fate, Brave Fencer Musashi, and many others.

Weeb games, Atlas, Falcom, NIS, Gust, and many other miscellaneous small studios.

All those little tiny Indie games that we got on Vita and the early PS4 generation.

Sony first and second party exclusives. Spyro, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Uncharted, Resistance, Infamous, Days Gone, Hotshots Golf, Rain, Puppeteer, Gravity Rush, Arc the Lad, Legend of Legaia, Wild Arms, Dark Cloud, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Brave Story, Jeanne d’Arc, Folklore, Patchwork Heroes, Knack, Horizon.

Those games no longer bind me to Sony for the most part. 🔗

I’ll go through these a few at a time.

Square Enix: The Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games, among others. FF11, 13, 13-2, 13-3, 14, 15, 16, all of these now have PC releases Some of them are now PC exclusive, like FF11. DQ7, 8, and 11 all have ports, that sometimes are better on other systems, DQ9 was never even released on playstation, and all those other games? Between the PS2 and PS3 generation, those all pretty much shifted over to Nintendo’s portables. Xenogears was a one-off and the devs went to another publisher that was bought by nintendo around the same time. SquareEnix barely do the small rpgs anymore like Threads of Fate, but we have gotten a few here and there, but almost entirely on other consoles and PC.

Weeb games. These were very strong for the PS2 and PS3 generations, but they started filtering away during the PS4 generation. Almost all of these now release both on Switch and PC now.

Those little indie games? Mostly brought to playstation by two guys who don’t work there anymore. Sony is entirely uninterested in them now. These have moved mostly to steam, gog, itchio, with some going to Switch.

Insomniac games. Spyro, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance. Of the things that Playstation still has, this studio is at least still putting things out, and mostly things I like… It’s not a system seller, but the Spiderman trilogy (1, Miles, 2) is actually decent. Except now they’re on Disney-patrol making Wolverine as a followup to Spiderman. I honestly can’t say that I will enjoy that game. Spyro isn’t owned by them anymore, and Ratchet’s best days were in the PS3 era. The two games we’ve gotten since have been above average, but not system sellers.

Their second most promising studio from my point of view is Guerilla That said, it’s a recent thing. The Horizon series is pretty decent. We’ll have to see if they keep it up or if it goes to crap.

Their third most promising studio. They made Sly Cooper and Infamous from the PS2 to PS4 generations. Their ghost series is one that I do actually want to play, I just haven’t gotten around to it.

Fourth? Naughty Dog. I have low hopes for them because they moved their focus to The Last of Us late in the PS3 generation, and the uncharted games on PS4 feel like mostly the work of a smaller subteam, while their main team is working on games I have less interest in. Interstellar might be OK, but the main character is very much a trust fund baby larping as a bounty hunter, so I don’t have high hopes.

Asobi/Astrobot. They’re good, I like their games. They’re not enough to keep me on the console. They show nostalgia for something that no longer exists, something Sony no longer respects.

Arc the Lad? Didn’t escape the PS2 era. Legaia? Didn’t escape the PS2. Wild Arms? Didn’t make it out of PS2. Dark Cloud? Jeanne d’Arc? That studio left for greener pastures. Mostly still active over on Nintendo. Folklore? Brave Story? Game Republic is toast. Patchwork Heroes? That studio doesn’t work much with sony now. Gravity Rush? Booted. Rain? Closed down. Ico/Shadow of the Colossus? Barely hung on to get a 3rd game out on PS4, now dead. Rain? Kaput. Puppeteer? Gone. Knack? Toast. Days Gone? That studio will probably not get to release another game. Hotshots Golf? They kicked the studio that made it good and gave it to much lower quality studios. The majority of the things that made Sony worth playing are gone, with just a few huge studios left.

The operating system of choice. 🔗

When I first bought a Playstation, it was because I went from a Atari and NES gamer to a PC gamer on Dos, to a PC gamer running Dos games in OS/2. I couldn’t play the newest shiny games on PC anymore because they were moving to Windows, so I bought the Playstation, and my gaming partially shifted to consoles. I eventually bought many consoles. I didn’t stop gaming on PC, I eventually event went to windows, but PC stopped being my focus until sometime in the 2010’s when I bought a high end system for FF14. A few years later I went to Linux, and suddenly my PC gaming dropped way down again because only indie games were released on Linux. I switched FF14 over to PS4, and stuck to business on the PC.

Fast forward to 2020, and Proton. Games just kept getting better on Linux, and eventually almost everything I wanted to play worked on Linux. Linux is no longer a reason for me to keep consoles around or buy most of my games there. Reason 2 no longer keeps me tied to Playstation.

Portable games that fit in my pocket. 🔗

Honestly, this always was met by two companies, not just one. The higher end games? Vita. The lower end games? 3DS. Then Switch Lite came out, and it can play the high end games too.

Add to that the Steamdeck, and now even higher end games can be semi-portable. Add ArmadaOS, and I can even put lower end PC games on a small console. Reason 3 no longer keeps me tied to Playstation, and really hasn’t for 10 years.

The PC had a worse sharing option than consoles. 🔗

This was actually only true of physical games though. My son and I could share physical games just by passing them back and forth.

Steam though, now has family sharing. It’s not perfect, and doesn’t beat just handing the disc back and forth, but with Sony dropping discs, steam family sharing is now a superior option to Playstation 6.

Add GoG and Itch.IO to this, and many games are basically as convenient to share as physical games.

Reason 4 no longer keeps me tied to Playstation because they just killed it.

Sunk Cost. 🔗

I have a massive PS1/2/3/4/5 library. Well, technically a PS2/3/4/5/Vita library, since my PSP games have shifted to Vita since then.

    • 113 Digital Games (Not a single game over $30)
    • 26 PS+ Games (11 non-backlogged incomplete PS+)
    • 176 Total Games
  • PSVita:
    • 12 Physical Games
    • 188 Digital games (Actually a lot of $30-40 games on this list, mostly grabbed when the store was about to go down.)
    • 9 PS+ games (7 non-backlogged incomplete PS+)
    • 216 Total Games
  • PS4:
    • 45 Physical Games
    • 183 Digital Games (Vast majority little cheap games or deep discounted games, only 2 over $30.)
    • 21 PS+ Games (14 non-backlogged incomplete PS+)
    • 249 Total Games
  • PS5:
    • 15 Physical Games
    • 5 Digital Games (All sub-$20, since I changed my policy on digital game pricing around 2022.)
    • 7 PS+ Games (17 non-backlogged incomplete PS+)
    • 27 Total Games

Of course, the reason it is so low for PS2 is that I’ve finished most of the games for it over time. Also, I’m more likely to finish a physical game first because I bought those due to being excited for them for the most part. Digital things are far more often backlog fodder.

But all of these are for consoles I already have. I have 2 PS2’s, 3 PS3’s, 5 PSVitas, 1 PS4, and 2 PS5/PS5 Pro units in the house. I’ll probably finish many of these games before the consoles die, and if not, then I can probably emulate the stragglers by then.

As far as this goes, The PS2 games? Those won’t get me to buy a PS6. The PS3 games? Unlikely to get me to buy a PS6, will they even support those? Vita games? Highly unlikely to get me to buy a PS6, because the PS6 is unlikely to play those.

PS4 Games? PS5 Games? well, PS6 Home console is supposed to play these, but so will my PS5 Pro.

PS6 Portable though? Well, There are some that might work there. 183 Digital games on PS4, and 2 Digital games on PS5 (Those 2 may or may not work on the portable, and 3 of the PS5 games are VR.)

I will not buy many games for the PS6 portable, so it comes down to if 185 games is worth buying a whole console for…

And that probably comes down to form factor. If it’s a big honking monster like the Steamdeck, then I’m less likely to buy it. If it’s the size of the Switch lite, and under $600, then I might get it just to have a portable way to play those games. I did buy the $500 PSVR2 for exactly 5 games, 3 of which I haven’t finished yet.

I might even play a ratchet and clank or horizon 3 if the price drops to under $20.

So Reason 5 will get me to keep my old consoles, but will definitely not get me to buy a PS6 Home console.
